Wayside House is situated in the historic, picturesque village of New Radnor at the foot of the Radnor Forest and Hills in Powys, Wales. Built in 1832, this exceptionally attractive and spacious grade II listed house offers remarkable value with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, four reception rooms, kitchen and storage over three floors within a classic early-19th century shell.

New Radnor was a planned medieval walled town with streets laid out on a grid pattern. Behind the village are the earthworks of the castle, its origins dating from the 11th century. Wayside House was originally owned by the Lewis family and, at the entrance to New Radnor, is a splendid grade II listed monument to Sir George Cornewall Lewis, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary 1855-61.

Given the historical significance of this very fine house and its perfect position in the scenic landscape of the Welsh Marches, decorated to a very high standard, offers a very unique opportunity to purchase a very fine late-Georgian house at an exceptionally good price.

Further History

Wayside House, built in 1832, originally belonged to the estate of nearby Harpton Court, home of the Lewis family since the early 16th century and recognized as one of Radnorshire’s finest neo-classical houses. The south elevation, along with service buildings to the west and several of the interiors, was probably designed by John Nash. In 1911 Harpton Court was inherited by the Duff-Gordon family, Sir Edmund Cosmo Duff-Gordon, who represented Great Britain in the 1906 Summer Olympics, and his wife were survivors of the ill-fated maiden voyage of Titanic. Parts of the Harpton Court were demolished in 1956, when dilapidation dictated that much of the house was beyond reasonable repair.

The Duff-Gordons sold Wayside House in 1920 and it was run for a while as a temperance hotel.
